McKnight’s latest book is a needed challenge for all readers of the Bible. Read it through, the first chapters feel like something you’ve read before but the point (and what we do with the point) is a subtle but greatly needed challenge. McKnight’s writing style is engaging, like that of a good teacher.
In my experience, interpreting the Bible is a topic people tend to get very prickly about. “The Bible says it so I believe it!” wouldn’t be taken out of context much for quite a few Christians I know. The problem is, we do pick and choose. As far as I know, this guy is the only person I’ve heard of who really tried to live out everything in the Bible. The question is “how to do this in a way that honors God.”
Here’s the premise of the book, “Since the evidence reveals that we are all adopters and adapters[meaning we pick and choose], we need to admit it and then seek to explain ourselves.” It is a very practical look into reading, listening, and discerning a pattern of living for today faithful to the Bible. The most explicitly practical example I’ve read, and I went to Bible school! The most important aspect of this book is it engages the issue when we mostly want to ignore it. I highly recommend it – we all need that challenge.
